The department was founded in 1991 under the name Department of Humanities, bringing together the work previously done in three areas: anthropology, including the postgraduate division and Center of Anthropological Research; philosophy, comprised of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs; and history, made up of the postgraduate division and Center of Historical Research. Soon thereafter the name was changed to the Department of Philosophy, in order to distinguish it from the area of Humanities, which also includes the departments of Fine Arts and Language and Literature. Thus began a focused effort to integrate these three areas of knowledge and to create spaces for them both within and outside of the University.
